yyxy (Hangul: 이달의 소녀 yyxy), stylized as LOONA/yyxy or LOOΠΔ/yyxy, is the third and final pre-debut sub-unit of the girl group LOONA, composed of members Yves, Chuu, Go Won and HyeJu (formerly Olivia Hye). They debuted on on May 30, 2018, with the mini album beauty&thebeat featuring the title track “love4eva”.

Name[]

The unit’s Korean name is pronounced Idalui Sonyeo Wai-wai-bai-wai (Korean: 이달의 소녀 yyxy) from the Sino-Korean root meaning “Girl of the Month”, combined with the made-up neanthropic chromosome “yyxy”.

Concept[]

yyxy is composed of four girls held in a separate dimension called Eden. In “love4eva”, it’s revealed that if they eat their individual Forbidden Fruit, they are expelled from Eden. They soon feel trapped and adventurous, so Yves convinces Chuu and Go Won to eat their forbidden fruit and escape with her. Olivia Hye also wants to go but is not brave enough to eat her fruit. They leave without her.

Olivia Hye eventually eats her fruit and tries to follow them, but becomes lost and angry. She knows that Yves plans to create a new dimension, and decides to destroy it out of anger at being abandoned by her friends.

This journey is about the ego of the youth. Being in love, hurt, broken, but still stepping forward, the girls capture moments of youth to complete an ego. They express that ego is falling in love with themselves, and that they must first love themselves before loving others. They declare neanthropic chromosome yyxy, different to xx or xy chromosomes.

Trivia[]

yyxy made their debut 6 days after Yves’ birthday.
yyxy’s first stage performance was at their own event: LOONA Premier Greeting: Line & Up. This is considered extremely unique and unheard of as debut stages for groups are usually performed on live TV shows, such as Inkigayo or M Countdown, and not at their own events.
yyxy is the first sub-unit in LOONA to have every member go by a stage name.
yyxy was originally called 3/3.^[2]
They are all heavy sleepers, but they can all get themselves ready the fastest.^[3]
On average, they had the least amount of time to train with the company before debut.
One of the sub-unit’s biggest fans is Jihan (Han Jihyo) of Weeekly. She has interacted with every member of the sub-unit, but has yet to interact with Go Won individually. Jihan’s representative color is dark red, which is the closest to Yves’s burgundy.
In the sub-unit, Yves is the oldest and Olivia Hye the youngest.
The members are actually sorted in age and ranking order.
