History

Early life (1999–2016)

Kim Lip was born on February 10, 1999, as the youngest of two siblings. She has one older sister. As a child, Kim Lip often visited Everland with her family, and has fond memories of those trips.[4]

When Kim Lip was in sixth grade, she joined a dance class after her mother told her she needed to lose weight. This ignited her love of dancing and singing, and she began to dream of becoming an idol.[4] Kim Lip also swam on her school’s swimming team for about seven years.[5]

Kim Lip met future-LOONA member Chuu in middle school, and they attended all three years of high school together as friends.[6]

Kim Lip auditioned unsuccessfully for multiple agencies before she was contacted through Instagram by Polaris-BlockBerry around January 2016.[7] After being cast by BlockBerry Creative, Kim Lip trained in hopes of being chosen for the LOONA project. She saw other trainees with shorter training periods than her selected first, and she became uncertain in herself.[4] After waiting for one year and three months, Kim Lip was chosen as the sixth member of LOONA.

On May 11, 2017, the fifth “Who’s Next Girl?” teaser was released, and Kim Lip was revealed as the sixth member of LOONA on May 15. This came as a surprise to many fans, who expected JinSoul to be the next revealed member after her feature on ViVi’s “Everyday I Need You”.

Kim Lip released her solo single album Kim Lip on May 23, 2017 and subsequently debuted as a member of LOONA.

Kim Lip was featured in a small role in the first and second seasons of web drama Woomanna as university student Kim Jung-eun.

On August 29, 2017, Kim Lip was revealed as a member of LOONA’s second sub-unit, ODD EYE CIRCLE. She was later confirmed to be the leader of the sub-unit, and described her special talent as being dance.[4]

Kim Lip was featured on the cover of the October 2017 issue of CéCi China and gave a lengthy interview.[4]

In January, 2018, Kim Lip was featured on Chuu and Go Won’s duet, “See Saw”, where she sang half of the introductory verse.

On February 9, Kim Lip graduated from Hanlim Multi Arts High School alongside Chuu.

From February to March of 2018, Kim Lip starred alongside fellow ODD EYE CIRCLE members JinSoul and Choerry in the third season of Woomanna. She reprised her role from seasons 1 and 2, though her character’s name was changed to Kim Lip.

On August 20, Kim Lip officially debuted as a member of the completed group LOONA. She and her members released the mini-album [+ +], along with the title track “Hi High”.

2022: World tour, legal disputes

On May 31, LOONA released the official announcement poster on social media regarding their first world tour called LOONA 1st World Tour: [LOONATHEWORLD]. Kim Lip was absent from the Chicago, Illinois Meet & Greet event due to not feeling her best.[8]

On November 28, all members of LOONA, except for HyunJin and ViVi, filed injunctions to suspend their exclusive contracts with BlockBerryCreative.[9]

2023: Departure from BlockBerryCreative, signing with MODHAUS, ARTMS, <Version Up>

On January 13, 2023, HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry won their lawsuits to terminate their exclusive contracts with BlockBerryCreative.[10] On February 1, a source from BlockBerryCreative confirmed they will submit a petition asking to suspend their entertainment activities.[11]

On March 3, the eleven remaining members of LOONA performed their first, and likely last, concert in Japan: LOONA 1st Live: LOONA THE WORLD IN TOKYO. Despite winning her injunction against BlockBerryCreative to suspend her contract, Kim Lip participated in this concert.

On March 17, 2023, HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry were announced to have signed an exclusive contract with MODHAUS.[12] On April 1, they were revealed as a part of a re-debut project called the “ARTMS Strategy”.[13]

On June 19, it was reported ODD EYE CIRCLE will be coming back with a new album in mid-July.[14] On July 12, ODD EYE CIRCLE released their second mini album <Version Up>, marking it as their first release in nearly six years. Kim Lip participated in writing the lyrics of the title track, “Air Force One”.
