ARTMS (/ˈɑɹtəmɪs/; Korean: 아르테미스; RR: areutemiseu) is a South Korean girl group formed by MODHAUS. While intended to be a project group and placeholder to house all 12 members of LOONA once they made their departure from BlockBerryCreative, its final lineup is composed of 5 members: HeeJin, HaSeul, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry.
They debuted on May 31, 2024, with the studio album <Dall>, alongside the title track “Virtual Angel”, preceded by four pre-release singles: “Birth”, “Flower Rhythm”, “Candy Crush”, and “Air”, the latter three based on ARTMS’ previous releases.
Name[]
The name ARTMS is derived from “Artemis”, the Greek goddess associated with the Moon. As such, it also shares connections with other things named after the goddess, including the Moon exploration program led by United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Their Korean name “아르테미스” is officially shortened to “아르르” (ARR).[1]
Concept[]
The group plans to “continue the identity of LOONA,”[2] following a similar moon–based name of ARTMS. The first project teaser shows 12 moons representing their original intention of reuniting LOONA as a whole, with four full moons at the center representing HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry.
The slogan of ARTMS is “We rise together, back to the moon and beyond.”
History[]
2022–2023: Formation, signing with MODHAUS, solo releases, “The Carol 3.0”[]
On November 28, 2022, all members of LOONA, except for HyunJin, ViVi and Chuu, filed injunctions to suspend their exclusive contracts with BlockBerryCreative.[3]
On January 14, 2023, it was announced HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry won their lawsuits to terminate contracts with BlockBerryCreative, whereas HaSeul lost her initial injunction.[4]
On March 17, 2023, HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry were announced to have signed exclusive contracts with MODHAUS.[5]
On March 28, MODHAUS filed a trademark request for 오드아이써클 (ODD EYE CIRCLE), and an additional request for “ODD EYE CIRCLE” (in English) on April 3, 2023.
MODHAUS CEO Jaden Jeong said that since he left BlockBerryCreative in 2019, he and the LOONA members had kept in contact and had a meal together about once a year. Initially, the members came to Jeong for advice in picking a management company, but eventually decided to join MODHAUS. Jeong rejected speculation that members would join tripleS, instead referring to them as “sister groups” with possible cross-group collaborations in the future.[2]
Jeong stated that the ARTMS members are currently creating new music, and he is “working closely” JinSoul to develop her A&R skills. Jeong also stated that he is “open” to revising the scrapped music of La Maison, with a “plan on releasing it at the right time”.[2]
On March 31, ARTMS officially opened their social media accounts. They were announced as “not a name of a new group [but rather] a story about the amazing strategies and plans of the girls to get to the moon. HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry, will start this story.”[6] Jeong reiterated this in an interview, stating that ARTMS “not a new group name” but a way to reference the “actions and activities” of members.[2]
The ARTMS website included imagery of 12 moons, and an extended audio from the first teaser (unreleased and unofficially referenced as “B#RN”) for LOONA’s second mini album [#], which was one of the last pieces of content that Jaden Jeong produced with LOONA.[7]
On June 16, HaSeul won her lawsuit to terminate her exclusive contract with BlockBerryCreative.[8]
On June 20, HaSeul was announced to have signed an exclusive contract with MODHAUS, making her the fifth and final member from LOONA to join ARTMS.[9]
On July 6, the tracklist for ODD EYE CIRCLE’s <Version Up> stated that “initially, ARTMS was the name of the program to reach an orbit, but fate intertwined the girls with the name.”[10]
On October 26, the release of HaSeul’s “Plastic Candy” first announced ARTMS’ debut album, said to be released “early next year”.[11] HeeJin’s solo release <K> description revealed the album’s title, <Dall>, and stated it is “aiming to restart LOONA’s worldview”.[12]
On December 1, ARTMS released their first pre-debut single “The Carol 3.0”.
